Introduction to Old Norse-Icelandic literature and culture. Primary texts will be read in translation, with analysis and discussion of their literary features, cultural context, background in oral tradition, genesis, preservation and reception.
Lectures in English. As far as possible, texts will be made available in English, Finnish and Swedish as well as Old Norse-Icelandic. Students may complete written work in those or other languages (e.g. French or German) by permission of instructor.

Attendance and active participation, reading texts in advance of each session
Weekly reading journal
Analytic research essay
