Finland is among leading countries in generating futures-oriented scientific knowledge and well-developed in offering a wide selection of applications in the field. Futures research is a multidisciplinarity scientific field and all other sciences are relevant from futures perspectives. The aim of futures research is to analyse future developments and distinguish possible, probable and preferable futures.
Philosophical, Methodological and Pragmatic Approaches to Scientific Futures Research (3 ECTS credits)

University of Turku
The course consists of a pre-assignment and an intensive learning session of three days 6–8 Nov 2013 at the University of Turku.
The pre-assignment is based on a given literature combined with individual learning and elaboration of a presentation. During the intensive learning session there are student presentations with discussions (first day) followed by issue-specific lectures and discussions according to a detailed course programme (second and third days).
Who should attend?
The course is available for postgraduate students at the University of Turku and the nine Finland Futures Academy's member universities.
The course is also suitable for students finalising their Master's degree and making plans about post-graduate studies. It is also available for the personnel of the University of Turku (acquiring credits is optional). In case of making a selection among applicants, post-graduates performing the course, are priviledged.
The course is especially useful for post-graduate students, who a) give an overview of future developments as a part of the dissertation thematic area, b) apply several research methods or focus on a multidisciplinary issue area. The mode of including the course into personal post-graduate procedures needs to be discussed with the supervisor.
