Juha Laine and Timo Veromaa Appointed as Professors of Practice at the University of Turku

Docent Juha Laine has been appointed as Professor of Practice in Pharmacoeconomics and Dr. Timo Veromaa Professor of Practice in Drug Development. The appointments strengthen the operations of the InFLAMES Flagship, joint effort of the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University, funded by the Academy of Finland. Both professors of practice have been offered part-time positions for the duration of the InFLAMES Flagship funding period.

Promising Results from First-in-Humans Study of a Novel PET Radiopharmaceutical - Study Continues with Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients

The preliminary trial results of a novel radiopharmaceutical for PET imaging of inflammation developed at the University of Turku, Finland, have been published. The compound, which targets the vascular adhesion protein 1 (VAP-1) that regulates inflammatory cell traffic, is the first radiopharmaceutical that has been developed completely in Finland and has advanced to clinical trials. In the study that started with healthy volunteers, the radiopharmaceutical was found to be well tolerated and safe.

Number of Dominant Tree Species in Amazonian Rain Forests Three Times Greater than Assumed

An international team of researchers has compiled a large set of field data and reports that the number of hyperdominant tree species in Amazonian rain forests is three times greater than believed thus far. Hyperdominants are the most abundant species that together make up at least half of all the individuals that are studied. These results can be used for better planning of conservation and use of Amazonian forests.

ViLLE Learning Platform Receives UNESCO's ICT in Education Prize

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization has awarded the ViLLE learning platform developed by the Centre for Learning Analytics at the University of Turku with the 2020 UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize. The Prize is given annually to two nominees whose projects promote learning and teaching with information and communication technology.

Let’s Cope Together website offers families ways to manage worries about coronavirus

Finnish parents felt that the Let’s Cope Together website, which is based on behavioural therapy methods, helped them and their child to manage worries related to the coronavirus during the first spring of the pandemic. The website, which has been created by the Research Centre for Child Psychiatry at the University of Turku, is opened today for anonymous use. As well as the English, Finnish and Swedish versions, the content will also soon be offered in Russian and Japanese.

The panel discussion considers the role of education as a pathway to inclusion

This issue will be addressed in the panel discussion On the Right Track - Education as a Pathway to Inclusion at the Faculty of Education of the University of Turku. On Thursday 8.4. Olli-Pekka Heinonen, the Director General of the Finnish National Agency for Education, will take part in the panel discussion streamed via zoom from 10.15 to 11.45.
