Topics of the course are chemical process and environmental engineering, chemistry and materials of energy storages.
Course contents
This course is a continuation of the course Properties of functional materials. General prerequisites: Basic knowledge in physics and chemistry and the course Properties of Functional Materials KEMI4027
- Functional materials with prominent characteristics are used as examples for different applications. Materials classified as energy material and their use as energy harvesting, converting, harvesting and transferring of energy will be discussed.
- Different ways of applying these materials in optical and energy devices (light emitting diodes, solar cells, supercapacitors, smart windows etc.), in transistors, sensors, medical applications and as catalyst materials are discussed.
- Additionally, the course discusses how to combine materials into efficient composite materials in order to modify the functionality to fit different applications.
Learning outcomes
After the course, you will
- know more about photo- and electroactive materials and how their properties can be utilised in many applications
- have an idea of how to optimise and tune some of the materials’ properties and on how to achieve the best fit when combining materials either in a composite or as a neighboring layer in an application.
Completion methods
- This course doesn’t have a fixed schedule and it can be studied at your own pace.
- Completion by writing a learning diary (presumed student’s workload for independent studying approx. 50-54 h).
- The material is available online in Moodle.
