Tiivistelmä väitöstutkimuksesta:
This dissertation examines how the Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) influences social media users in their personal and professional lives. FoMO is one of the contemporary phenomena that are discussed with regards to the dark side (or negative side) of social media. Recent academic works on social media-induced FoMO have discussed that the influence of FoMO transcends social media use with implications on peoples’ day-to-day behaviors.
Through five journal articles, this thesis investigates and determines FoMO’s associations with social media use behavior (e.g., social media stalking, problematic sleep due to social media, social media fatigue, online social comparisons) that can have adverse effects on users’ personal lives and well-being. Further, extending existing knowledge, the thesis also examines and ascertains that FoMO, through problematic use of technological platforms (social media and smartphones) also influences working professionals’ work-related behavior (e.g., procrastination and performance), psychological state (e.g., exhaustion) and relationships (i.e., workplace incivility).
The findings advance the understanding of FoMO and the dark side of social media. The findings can be applied to develop interventions that can assist social media users in preempting or avoiding the negative consequences. As social media affects billions of people, the results of the dissertation have societal relevance on a global scale.
