The Faculty of Social Sciences introduces bridge funding for those aspiring to become an Academy Research Fellow. Applications are invited from researchers who applied in the last round of applications for an Academy Research Fellow position but were not successful and will apply again in the winter 2024 call.
Professor of Evolutionary Biology Virpi Lummaa from the University of Turku in Finland has received a major funding from the European Research Council ERC. Lummaa received the funding for a research project that focuses on how major societal changes in the past 300 years have influenced human kinship networks and how they, in turn, have influenced the evolutionary fitness of people in the 18th to 20th century Finland. Lummaa also investigates the same questions in Asian elephants, which have suffered from declines in population size during the past 50 years due to human influence.
Docent Pekka Postila and Professor Olli Pentikäinen from the Institute of Biomedicine and InFLAMES Flagship have received 100,000 dollars in funding from the SynGAP Research Fund (SRF) for SynGAP syndrome research.

The European Research Council (ERC) has awarded a Synergy Grant, named “BlackHolistic”, of 14 million Euro to a team of Dutch, British, Finnish, and Namibian astronomers to make colour movies of black holes. Researchers from the University of Turku are involved in international collaboration.
Altogether 143 researchers from Nigeria took part and completed a grant writing training organised and coordinated by the University of Turku’s Global Education Services in May and June 2022. Turku PET Centre opens a call for grant applications for scientific research in radiopharmaceutical chemistry. The grant is for research in preclinical development of new radiopharmaceuticals for positron emission tomography (PET).
BioCity Turku is an umbrella organization supporting and coordinating research on life sciences and molecular medicine in University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University. BioCity Turku research programs strengthen the multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research collaboration within the Turku campus.
