People living in the area of Finland have never been a homogeneous group. Our cultural, genetic and linguistic heritage all have a diverse background and are in a constant state of change. People, ideas, customs and diseases have always moved from place to place and left their mark on the population. In a major research consortium, researchers are studying how these marks are still visible in people.

Prof. Carolyn McKinney: changing perceptions about multilingual learning
Professor Carolyn McKinney from University of Cape Town visited the School of Language and Translation Studies in April and observed the difference between learning facilities in South Africa and Finland. In South Africa, Prof. McKinney is working in small intervention projects in schools to look at what is possible.
Multilingualism Winter School Brought Together EC2U Students and Staff Members – Encounters Led to Co-operation
New research ideas and perspectives, new partners and a renewed enthusiasm for one's own subject area rose up as result of the EC2U Winter School of Multilingualism, European Languages and Societies organised by the University of Turku. Multilingualism attracted more than an expected number of students, researchers and teachers to snowy Turku.
