Claims about the Ineffectiveness of Mammography Screening Are Incorrect

Mammography screening programme for 40-year-old women and for 70-year-old women has significantly decreased the breast cancer mortality rate. The doctoral dissertation research of med. lic. Ilmo Parvinen also proves that claims about overdiagnosis are incorrect. On the basis of his research, Parvinen recommends extending the screening programme to older women aged 70–74.

Researchers from the University of Turku discovered how the highly aggressive Escherichia coli, i.e. the E. coli bacteria, colonise the human intestine. Based on the discovery, the researchers are developing antibodies that could stop the infection caused by the bacteria resistant to antibiotics.

The University of Turku Doctor Honoris Causa Stefan W. Hell is one of the three recipients of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry this year. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to the developers of optical microscopes with high resolution at the nanometer scale.

​Stefan W. Hell, who worked at the University of Turku as a researcher in the 1990s, was conferred as doctor honoris causa of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Turku in the spring of 2009.
