Khalil Shahramian Wins International 3MT Competition

Doctoral Candidate Khalil Shahramian from the Institute of Dentistry of the University of Turku won the Three Minute Thesis competition for European universities. Shahramian and three other doctoral candidates competed to win the 3MT Competition at the Annual Conference of Coimbra Group in Salamanca on 1 June.

​In the Turku competition, Shahramian won both the votes of the judges and the audience.

Women are more prone to the development of autoimmune diseases. The female hormone estrogen is likely to affect the immune system. A team of scientists from Turku Center for Biotechnology and University of Georgia reported new findings related to the involvement of estrogen hormone receptor in autoimmune diseases.

Hospital Superbug Uses Tiny Sticky Fingers to Infect Medical Tools and Devices

The antibiotic-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii bacterium is one of the most globally harmful bacteria that causes nosocomial infections. Researchers at the University of Turku have discovered that the bacterium attaches to plastic medical devices using tiny finger-like structures. The researchers were able to develop antibodies that prevent the bacterial spread.

Delegation from Indonesian Syiah Kuala University Visited University of Turku

As part of the ongoing “Strategic Intellectual Property Management for Effective Research & Innovation in Asian Higher Education” project, a delegation from the Indonesian Syiah Kuala University visited the University of Turku on 22‒24 May 2018. During the visit, the University of Turku and Syiah Kuala University signed a Memorandum of Understanding.

Olli Raitakari Selected as Academy Professor

New Material Detects the Amount of UV Radiation and Helps Monitor Radiation Dose

Researchers at the University of Turku have developed a synthetic SensoGlow™ material that detects the quantity and quality of ultraviolet radiation from the Sun or other sources. This material makes it possible to produce an affordable, versatile, and long-lasting UV radiation detector which can be used to monitor the UV radiation dose with a mobile app, for example.

Iceland Evaluates Implementation of KiVa Antibullying Programme

The University of Turku, Finland University, and The University of Iceland’s School of Education signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the purpose of which is to evaluate the implementation of the KiVa Antibullying Program in Icelandic schools.
