Doctoral Researcher Saara Koskela from the Institute of Biomedicine, InFLAMES Research Flagship and Turku Doctoral Programme of Molecular Medicine won the Three Minute Thesis competition of the University of Turku. Koskela will represent the University of Turku in the international 3MT competition organised by the Coimbra Group for European universities.
Ten doctoral researchers compete in the Three minute thesis finals as they present their research as interestingly as possible in just three minutes. The competition is held in entrance hall at the main building of the University of Turku on March 6 at 12.00–14.00, and the event is open for the public.
The University of Turku is involved in developing a new type of doctoral training through a doctoral education pilot funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture for the period of 2024–2027. The pilot will create a number of new three-year doctoral researcher positions at the University.
The University of Turku has received €3.3 million in EU funding for a doctoral training project that responds to the current need for experts by training 25 doctoral researchers from fields related to green and digital transition.
The University of Turku continues its commitment to promoting high-quality doctoral training by opening up a call for applications for approximately fifty fixed-term doctoral researcher positions. The application period for the positions is 28 August – 15 September 2023. The employment contract begins on 1 January 2024 and will last for a maximum of four years. All current doctoral researchers as well as those who are also applying for the study right for doctoral training can apply for the funded positions.

After conducting a research on fish populations in the Baltic sea, Doctoral Candidate MSc Giovanna Mottola found that some fish can still survive from current summer heat waves. But according to the research the general increase of temperature due to climate change all the year around can threaten this capacity.
The University of Turku offers exchange study positions and grants for 25 students who have fled Ukraine due to the invasion. The positions are open for applications for students and doctoral researchers from the EC2U’s new partner, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (IFNUL).
The University Board of the University of Turku has decided that the title ‘doctoral researcher’ will be used instead of 'doctoral candidate' in future. The use of the title ‘doctoral candidate’ will be abandoned from 1 August 2022 onwards.
