Become a Mentor for a Student

The mentoring programmes of the University of Turku support students’ transition into professional life and researchers’ and other staff members’ professional development. The University has mentoring programmes for Master's degree students who are about to graduate, young researchers, international staff and grant researchers who are aiming for a career outside academia, and other staff. Call for new mentors for the programmes is once again open during the autumn!

Pop up Vaccinations for Students Continued

The City of Turku continues to organise pop up coronavirus vaccinations for students at the Kirkkotie health station. In future, students can also get the second vaccination dose from the pop up events if a minimum of six weeks has passed from the first dose. The next vaccinations are held on Friday, 17 September, Thursday, 23 September, and on Friday, 1 October at 8.45am–3.15pm at the Kirkkotie health station (address Kirkkotie 13).

Entrepreneurship Course Launches EC2U Education Collaboration

Entrepreneurship for research professionals is the first joint course of the EC2U Alliance. Organised by Turku School of Economics, the course can be applied to with a motivation letter by all doctoral candidates of the EC2U universities. Completing the course also gives the students an opportunity to participate in the activities of EC2U Entrepreneurship Academy in spring 2022.

Researchers Observed Association between Standing and Insulin Sensitivity – Standing More May Help Prevent Chronic Diseases

Insulin is a key hormone in energy metabolism and blood sugar regulation. Normal insulin function in the body may be disturbed by e.g. overweight, leading to decreased insulin sensitivity and increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. In a Finnish collaborative study of Turku PET Centre and UKK institute, the researchers noticed that standing is associated with better insulin sensitivity. Increasing the daily standing time may therefore help prevent chronic diseases.

University’s Coronavirus Restrictions Will Be Eased in October

The coronavirus management team of the University of Turku has decided that if the epidemic allows it, the coronavirus restrictions will be eased by the second period of the autumn semester. The aim is to return to everyday campus life, increasing close contacts as safely as possible. The second period starts on 25 October 2021.
