Video: how does the new algae farm help boost circular bioeconomy?

20.11.2024

Professor of Molecular Plant Biology Yagut Allahverdiyeva-Rinne explains how new algae research projects are turning industrial effluent into valuable algae biomass.

AlgaTech is a new algae production facility at the Botanic Garden of the University of Turku in Ruissalo, where researchers are piloting and developing a new circular bioeconomy model based on algae farming.

The plant will use nutrient-rich agricultural and industrial effluents to grow microalgae. Growing algae cleans the effluent while producing valuable algae biomass that can be used in food, feed, chemicals, materials, and innovative agricultural products, such as bio-stimulants and bio-pesticides.

The long-term aim is to promote the algae sector and sustainable biotechnology in Finland and the Nordic region.
