Working Group for Sustainable Campus Life
The University of Turku is committed to advancing an organisational culture focused on sustainability. The Steering Group for Sustainable Development set up a Working Group for Sustainable Campus Life to plan and propose sustainable everyday activities and coordinate their implementation.
The University of Turku's Sustainable Campus Life Action Plan was launched in May 2022.The Action Plan guides the development of the University of Turku's campus life and includes recommendations for sustainable everyday choices.
Sustainable everyday choices include, for example, sustainable options in campus meals, taking into account the sustainability principles and the life-cycle impact of products in procurements, environmentally friendly and well-being-supporting mobility during working and studying hours, but also, for example, taking biodiversity into account in the development of campus areas.
Main Focus Areas of the Sustainable Campus Action Plan:
- Procurements and Logistics - Observing the principles of sustainable development and the life cycle impacts of products in procurements.
- Facility Projects and Usage of Facilities- Realising sustainable solutions in the planning of facility projects and the usage of facilities.
- Travelling and Commute to and from Work -Encouraging the members of the University community in different ways to commute to and from work and otherwise travel during work, studies, or free time in a manner that is environmentally friendly and supports well-being.
- Meals-Implementing campus meals and restaurant services as well as event production in collaboration with partners according to the principles of sustainable development.
- Circular Economy-Advancing circular economy in materials choices, usage and re-usage of products, and waste management
- Laboratories - Promoting sustainability in the laboratories of the University of Turku
- Internal Services, Regional Co-operation and Communications on Sustainable Everyday Life - Selecting external services and developing the internal services observing the principles of sustainable development throughout the entire life cycle of the service requirement.

The Chair of the Working Group for Sustainable Campus Life is Anna Vuolle, Head of Campus Services. The coordinator of the Group is Jutta Mäkinen, Sustainable Development Specialist and the secretary Facility Secretary Mika Nikkarla.
