Double Degree

School of Languages and Translation Studies, Department of French Studies

Double degree: a degree from two universities

The Department of French Studies at the University of Turku participates in offering a double degree programme together with Åbo Akademi University (Franska språket och litteratur) and the University of Nantes. The degree is based on the model of double degree, which means that the student of the University of Turku will get a Master’s degree and a degree certificate from both the University of Turku and the University of Nantes.

Basis of the double degree and targeted learning outcomes

Content of the double degree will lead to expertise in linguistics and in French as a Foreign Language (FLE). The departments and their researchers involved in the double degree programme are specialized in different subjects, and hence the double degree offers a diverse and extensive course selection. In each one of the universities, the course selection is based on their own research strengths. The strengths of these partner universities complement each other and offer the students an excellent scientific basis for their studies. Studies in the double degree programme are international and they include a term abroad. The double degree also provides an opportunity to work internationally. The studies include online courses as well, which shows that the double degree programme supports the strategic principle of digital teaching and learning.

Studies

The double degree is offered by the Department of French Studies at the School of Languages and Translation Studies at the University of Turku and Le département de Sciences du langage de l’UFR de Lettres et Langage at the University of Nantes (Université de Nantes). In this double degree programme, the students take a French Master’s degree at the University of Nantes and a Finnish Master’s degree at the University of Turku, though the studies are mainly in French at the latter one, too. At the Department of French Studies, the studies in the double degree consist of courses from the Degree Programme in Language Learning andTeaching and from the Language Specialist Degree Programme. The students can also take Master’s level courses in French language and literature at Åbo Akademi University (Flexible Study Right JOO).

Extent of the double degree is 120 ECTS, including a Master’s thesis of 30 ECTS. It takes two academic years to complete the double degree. Each degree programme gives the students eligibility to apply for doctoral studies.

The double degree programme includes one compulsory term at a foreign partner university. Each university will recognize and include the studies completed at other universities to be part of their degree programme (see Peppi).

You will find information on how to apply in 2024 on the university's intranet (please sign in with your UTU password).
