The Department of Chinese conducts research on contemporary Chinese linguistics, focusing on digital communications, corpus linguistics, cognitive linguistics, sociolinguistics, and second language acquisition. Our research explores language use in modern Sinophone societies, the intersection of language and technology, the interaction between language and cognition, and the role of language in social change.
The Department of Chinese at the University of Turku equips students with both linguistic and cultural expertise, preparing them for careers in international and language-specialist professions. We focus on modern Chinese, particularly communication and language use in contemporary Sinophone societies.
It has been possible to study Chinese language as a major subject at the University of Turku since 2021. The subject was recently strengthened with a new lecturer, Dr Hui Shi. The Chinese language department places special emphasis on the competence and skills needed in professional life and in various expert professions. The aim is that the students have a diverse understanding of the Chinese language and culture.
