The joint PET Centre of the University of Turku, Åbo Akademi, and Turku University Hospital (Tyks) will receive a €300,000 donation from the Signe and Ane Gyllenberg Foundation to celebrate the foundation's 75th anniversary. The donation will support a project investigating the effects of connections between the brain and the rest of the body on mental and physical health. The aim is to uncover the biological mechanisms through which mental functions can influence bodily processes and disease susceptibility, and vice versa.
Heidi Furu, MD, has been elected Professor of Practice in Occupational Health and Occupational Medicine at the University of Turku. She is a distinguished researcher, occupational health physician and teacher of occupational health physicians. The main role of the Professor of Practice is to promote research in occupational health and medicine and to contribute research knowledge to the societal debate.
The new AlgaTECH algae production facility at the University of Turku uses greenhouse or industrial waste water to produce ecological and cost-effective algal biomass. The researchers are developing new and suitable uses for algae biomass. The aim is to promote the Nordic bio-industry.

In 2018, the University of Turku received a donation from the Raisio Research Foundation worth of €500,000 for funding the first five years of the professorship in Food Development with special focus on Nordic foods and their health effects.
