Science of the Changing Sea
The Baltic Sea is in many ways a unique research subject – at the same time, it is a young sea, but also one of the busiest and most polluted seas in the world. It has been called a laboratory, a time machine, and a pilot, as the conservation methods that have been developed for the Baltic Sea are applicable around the world. At the University of Turku, biologists, geographers, historians and researchers in natural sciences and maritime spatial planning are focusing on the current challenges. Six researchers reveal how their research aims to improve the state of the Baltic Sea.

Archives of the School of History, Culture and Arts Studies
Archives of the School of History, Culture and Arts Studies, SHCAS Archives, is a research archive that hosts collections created by the departments of the School of History, Culture and Arts Studies. These collections contain ethnographic research material and historical documents covering various subjects, geographical areas and periods. The collections include both textual material, audio and visual recordings, and photos and drawings. The Archives preserves and maintains these materials and makes them available for research and teaching purposes.
University of Turku to Store Research Data in the National Digital Preservation Service
Digital preservation refers to long-term storage of digital information in an accessible and usable form for several decades or even centuries. The University of Turku has applied and been granted a permission by the Ministry of Education and Culture to store the materials in the Archives of History, Culture and Arts Studies (ACS Archive) to the national Digital Preservation Service for research data (DPS for research data). The University has signed an agreement with CSC – IT Center for Science this week. CSC is responsible for the realisation of the service.
Research Seminars in the Research Centre for Culture and Health
The Research Centre for Culture and Health explores the connections between culture, health, and illness from a multidisciplinary perspective. It is interested in all aspects of research and education relating to health and culture from pedagogical, narrative, artistic, philosophical, and biosocial perspectives (and many more!).
University Takes Technology and AI Research to SHIFT Business Festival
The University of Turku participates in the SHIFT Business Festival on 29–30 August with two themes: using technology in the sustainable development of the maritime and food industries and the interaction between humans and machines. The theme of SHIFT 2019 is Shapeshifting intelligence, which looks beyond the hype for a more holistic view of intelligent business.
Research Centre for Culture and Health
The Research Centre for Culture and Health explores the connections between culture, health, and illness from a multidisciplinary perspective. The centre also provides education, and it participates in initiatives related to the University’s third mission, societal interaction.
University of Turku’s 100th Anniversary Work Composed by Mikko Heiniö
Composer, Professor Emeritus of Musicology Mikko Heiniö has composed the anniversary work entitled Syvyyden yllä tuuli (Wind above the Depths) of the University of Turku’s centenary that will be celebrated next year. The composition will be performed for the first time at the University of Turku’s Anniversary Celebration in February 2020.
