Finland University and Saudi Arabian Ministry of Education have made an agreement on continuing education for Saudi teachers. The agreement was signed in Berlin on 15 March 2017 and the six-month education will begin in May-June.

​Finland University CEO Pekka T. Saavalainen and Cultural Attaché Dr Abdulaziz M. Al-Saleh from Saudi Arabia signed the agreement in Berlin on Wednesday, 15 March 2017.

New research reveals that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) increases glucose metabolism in muscles as well as insulin sensitivity in type 2 diabetes. Already after a two-week training period, the glucose uptake in thigh muscles returned to a normal level.

Turku BioImaging has been granted funding from the FIRI programme of the Academy of Finland. One of the end uses of the funding will be a new 3D super-resolution microscope. The device will continue the super-resolution heritage of bioimaging in Turku: Stefan Hell began developing super-resolved fluorescence microscopy at the University of Turku and received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work in 2014. The granted funding will enable the researchers at Turku BioImaging to examine incredibly accurate 3D images of live cells.

Researchers have discovered and identified 16 new fungus gnat species in the Amazonia. The diverse gnat species maintain exceptionally rich parasitoid wasp species, which shows the importance of interdependence between rain forest species.

The President of the Republic of Finland granted the honorary title of Academician of Science to Academy Professor Eva-Mari Aro. Professor Aro is a pioneer in molecular plant biology.

Researchers from Turku Centre for Biotechnology have observed that a protein called SHANK prevents the spread of breast cancer cells to the surrounding tissue. The SHANK protein has been previously studied only in the central nervous system, and it is known that its absence or gene mutations are related to autism. The research was conducted at Turku Centre for Biotechnology.

In the QS Ranking by subject, the University of Turku was the most successful, as a whole, in the fields of bioscience and medicine.
