Finnish universities have established a collaboration network whose aim is to protect persecuted researchers and promote the freedom of science and research. The founding members of the Scholars at Risk network are 10 Finnish universities, among them the University of Turku. Together with Åbo Akademi University, the University of Turku is the joint chair of the network for its first term. SAR is an international network of more than 460 higher education institutions in 35 countries working to protect threatened scholars and promote academic freedom.

According to a new study, cardiorespiratory fitness is inversely related to risk of fatty liver. The research was conducted at the University of Turku and shows that, despite the person's weight, achieving moderate cardiorespiratory fitness can protect from fatty liver.
A study coordinated by the Research Centre of Applied and Preventive Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Turku shows that exposure to cardiovascular risk factors, such as high blood pressure, elevated serum LDL-cholesterol and smoking in childhood and adolescence, is associated with poorer learning ability and memory in middle age.
Scientists have recently found and re-described a monitor lizard species from the island of New Ireland in northern Papua New Guinea. It is the only large-growing animal endemic to the island that has survived until modern times. The lizard, Varanus douarrha, was already discovered in the early 19th century, but the type specimen never reached the museum where it was destined as it appears to have been lost in a shipwreck.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs granted €12 million from the HEI ICI Programme to the development co-operation of higher education institutions in 2017–2020. Altogether 20 projects that strengthen higher education in developing countries will be realised with the funding in 16 countries.
The Entrepreneurial Act of the Year award at the University of Turku is €30,000. For the academic year 2016–2017, the main partner in awarding the act is OP Turun Seutu, OP Financial Group.
