Quarrying of Juslenia Causes Special Arrangements at University Hill

The quarrying of Juslenia will begin with test blastings on Thursday, 27 September at 8.30–8.45am and on Friday, 28 September at 8.30–8.45am. The actual blastings will begin on Monday, 1 October 2018. During the blastings, students and staff are asked to take extra caution near the construction site. The blastings will be finished by the end of January 2019.

Experienced Musicians Read Notes Only Slightly Faster – yet Difference Heard in Music

A musician's note reading speed and capability to effectively scan the notation are the keys to successful playing, found researchers as they were examining the music reading of players of different skill levels in an extensive experimental research project. Measurable differences in eye movements between beginner and professional musicians can be mere tenths of a second, but during that time a well-versed player has time to add flourish and play around with the music, interpreting it in their own manner.

Centre for Language and Communication Studies Starts Teaching Korean

The beginner’s course in Korean is a new initiative, and it is organised in co-operation between the Centre for Language and Communication Studies of the University of Turku and King Sejong Institute established by the South Korean government, and specialising in the teaching of the Korean language as well as cultural export.

First Salomaa Prize Awarded to Dr Jean-Eric Pin

The first Salomaa Prize was awarded to Dr Jean-Eric Pin from Paris. The award ceremonies took place in the annual Developments in Language Theory Symposium (DLT conference for short) in Tokyo on 13 September.

Researchers Managed to Prevent the Disappearing of Quantum Information

The properties of quantum mechanics can be utilised, for example, in technology and encrypting messages, but the disadvantage is the occasional disappearing of information. For the first time, a research group consisting of Finnish and Chinese scientists has found a way to fully control the information escaping the qubit.
