Biography

I am a Professor of English with a specialisation in translation. Before coming to the University of Turku, I worked as a developer of subtitling and translation for the Finnish public broadcaster Yle and the MeMAD research project (https://memad.eu/). Previously, I have worked as a Lecturer in Translation Studies at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, and in various roles at the University of Tampere, Finland. I also received my PhD in Translation Studies at the University of Tampere. Before my academic career, I worked as a freelance translator and subtitler for several years. I am a member of the FIT (International Federation of Translators) Council for 2022–2025, and the chair of FIT’s standing committee on audiovisual translation.

Research

In my research, I mostly focus on audiovisual translation and subtitling. I am interested in both viewers and professional subtitlers: I have conducted research on viewers' opinions on and attitudes towards subtitled programmes, and I am also investigating subtitlers' professional communities and career paths. Together with Tytti Suojanen and Kaisa Koskinen, I have developed the model of user-centered translation, which applies tools and principles of usability to translation. My ongoing project is to develop a user-centered model for subtitling. I am also interested in fostering collaborations between academia and practitioners. Together with Dr Hannah Silvester (University College Cork), I am a co-founder of SubComm (https://www.subcomm.co.uk), which is a community and collaboration platform for subtitling practitioners and academics.
