UTUPS Online Courses Becoming a Higher Education Teacher & Digital and Interactive Teaching and Learning

In University Pedagogy 1 (10 ECTS), the first two courses (Becoming a Higher Education Teacher, 2 ECTS, and Digital and Interactive Teaching and Learning, 3 ECTS) are available in English. These courses can be completed without a separate application process. For the third course (Teaching Skills in Practice, 5 ECTS), a separate application process is required (see intranet).

Becoming a Higher Education Teacher (2 ECTS)

WHAT: Becoming a Higher Education Teacher (2 ECTS) is a course designed for higher education teachers, other staff members, doctoral researchers, and anyone interested in higher education pedagogy. The course introduces participants to basic concepts related to teaching in higher education and elements to consider when planning teaching. These concepts will provide tools for self-reflection and development as a teacher, and the elements will help in planning new courses or developing existing ones. See study guide to read more.

Please note: The course is based on the UNIPS courses Becoming a Teacher (1 ECTS) and How to Plan My Teaching (1 ECTS). If you have completed both or other one of these courses, do not register due to content overlap. If you have completed either of the UNIPS courses (Becoming a Teacher, 1 ECTS, or How to Plan My Teaching, 1 ECTS), you can complete the new course, Becoming a Higher Education Teacher (2 ECTS), by submitting a complementary essay. This practice is ONLY for those who have completed either of the one-credit UNIPS courses.

HOW: The course is organized as online studies from 1.9.2024 to 30.11.2024 on Moodle. During the course, students will study the course materials and write an essay based on the materials and their own teaching experiences. Submitting your essay will take you to the peer feedback phase, where you have about two weeks to comment on your group members' essays.

WHEN: The course runs on a monthly cycle, with three optional completion periods in Autumn 2024:

September: If you want to complete the course in September 2024, please submit your reflective essay to Moodle by September 15th. If you submit your essay before the deadline, you will find your group members' essays on Moodle on September 16th. You have about two weeks to comment on your group members' essays.
October: If you want to complete the course in October 2024, please submit your reflective essay to Moodle by October 15th. If you submit your essay before the deadline, you will find your group members' essays on Moodle on October 16th. You have about two weeks to comment on your group members' essays.
November: If you want to complete the course in November 2024, please submit your reflective essay to Moodle by November 15th. If you submit your essay before the deadline, you will find your group members' essays on Moodle on November 16th. You have about two weeks to comment on your group members' essays.

Digital and Interactive Teaching and Learning (3 ECTS)

WHAT: Digital and Interactive Teaching and Learning (3 ECTS) is a course designed for higher education teachers, other staff members, doctoral researchers, and anyone interested in higher education pedagogy. The course consists of different cases related to teaching situations and reflections on solutions to them. It aims to support participants in interpreting and solving typical issues that emerge in teaching and supervising situations, basing their decisions on research findings and theories of higher education pedagogy. See study guide to read more

HOW: The course is organized as online studies from 1.11.2024 to 30.5.2025 on Moodle. During the course, students will study the course materials, write an essay, prepare a PowerPoint presentation based on the essay, and participate in a Zoom meeting where students will work in small groups. During the Zoom meeting, students will present their PowerPoint presentations to their small group members and comment on their presentations.

WHEN: Students can study, write the essay, and prepare the PowerPoint presentation at their own pace. Once these are done, the student will attend one Zoom meeting, where active participation is required. The Zoom meetings will be organized monthly, alternating between Finnish and English. In English-language meetings, both the language of the PowerPoint presentation and the spoken language will be English. In Finnish-language meetings, the presentation can be either in Finnish or English, but the spoken language will be Finnish. Each student attends only one Zoom meeting. Students can choose which Zoom session to attend but need to be able to communicate in the language of the meeting (Finnish for Finnish-language meetings and English for English-language meetings).
