Aerobiological Research
Aerobiology is the study of organic particles (such as pollen grains, spores and bacteria) transported by air.
The University of Turku has monitored airborne pollen counts in Finland since 1974, and the national pollen forecast service was started in 1976. Our network consists of about 10 monitoring sites throughout Finland. We participate in research on the airborne transport of pollen and allergens, and their health-related and ecological effects. Long-term pollen monitoring data can be used in climate change research. Indoor air microbes are another research area of our group.
