The research activities of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery cover a wide range of areas that are related to the field.

The Department has published doctoral theses since 1952. The Department has generated a large number of permanent cell lines from head and neck malignancies. In addition to radio and chemosensitivity and prognostic factors, these cell lines and the clinical information gained from them have formed the basis for fruitful collaboration with a number of scientists in Finland and abroad.

The Department’s biomaterial research and the clinical applications of bioactive glass have led to several clinical applications. This research area is carried out largely in collaboration with the Institute of Dentistry.
