Department of Finnish History
At the Department of Finnish History, we teach and study the history of Finland with a wide-ranging approach. In a cosmopolitan world, it is necessary to link the history of Finland to a broader context, where Finland’s history is seen as part of the history of the Baltic Sea Region and Europe.
We focus on the history of commerce and consumption as well as on urban and gender history. In addition, our Department is also interested in intellectual history and archival sciences. Researchers at the Department of Finnish History study phenomena that span from the Middle Ages and early modern history to the formation of modern society.
