Department of Classics
The Department of Classics fosters the knowledge of classical languages and culture – the foundation of academia and Western civilization.
The Department of Classics consists of three subjects: Greek philology, Latin philology and classical archaeology. The study of classical languages acquaints students with Greek and Latin texts; the objective is that they learn to understand these texts in their own context. Classical archaeology focuses on the study of the material culture of the ancient Mediterranean world. The objectives of philological research are manifold, since it deals with the language itself as well as with culture or history – anything that can be conveyed through text. The field is extremely broad in its contents due to this wide-ranging historical perspective.
The students of the Classics have their own student organisation, Palladion.
