The Human Diversity research consortium, led by the University of Turku, studies human diversity from the perspectives of language, genetics, culture and health. We are now opening three new and unique assistant professor positions for the multidisciplinary research consortium. We are looking for assistant professors in Evolutionary Language Sciences, Archaeogenomics, and Evolutionary Health. The application period ends on 13 March 2024.
The University of Turku is a world-class multidisciplinary research university that offers challenging tasks and a unique vantage point into the Finnish and international world of science and education.
The University of Turku's strategy 2021-2030 identifies six strategic thematic areas for research and education that promote multidisciplinary research and education between faculties, strengthen cooperation within the university, and create platforms for networks, innovations, and strategic partnerships.
The Human Diversity research consortium is part of the "Cultural memory and social change" entity and is run by the Department of Biology, the School of Languages and Translation Studies, the Department of Computing, and the School of History, Culture and Art Studies. Its research combines evolutionary biology, genetics, medicine and demography, archaeology, history, computational historical linguistics, mathematical modelling and computer science.
The aim is to enable the transition towards a society that broadly accepts human diversity. By understanding how the past has shaped the language, culture and health of people living in the present, it is possible to predict future change from a historical perspective.
Currently, the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Science of the University of Turku have three tenure track positions open for application. In addition to the now recruited professorships and already established postdoc researchers, the team will be consolidated in 2024 by three 2-year postdocs to be recruited in the research area of each new professorship.
The positions strengthen the multidisciplinary research, teaching and societal interaction within our Human Diversity research consortium, funded by the Profi7 program of the Research Council of Finland.
The central questions of the consortium are how human contacts and communication networks have produced the past and current human diversity, and what it will be like in the future.
