Mentor Tiina Salmio
As a mentor, I have realized the importance of courage and encouraging it
I work in the domestic preparedness unit of the central office of the Finnish Red Cross. Among other things, I am responsible for the reception of quota refugees and the related cooperation with the authorities, as well as the coordination of volunteers and counseling work related to family reunification.
Mentoring had interested me for a long time. In previous jobs, I have supervised interns and student theses and participated in recruitments. In my free time, I'm passionate about helping my friends with job applications. I have found these things motivating. The request to be a mentor came at the right moment because my own family situation allowed me to volunteer.
My own working life experience helps to open a range of possibilities for a student who is in the final stages of their studies. On the other hand, having recruited people myself, I can give concrete advice on job hunting and making applications. Through acting as a mentor, I myself have followed more closely the development of the field of social science and placement opportunities in Finland and around the world.
As a mentor, I have realized the importance of courage and encouraging it. Young students should be supported to think about their own skills and interests and set their goals based on them. Dreams that sound crazy can come true.
