The University’s Opening Carnival will be organised on Wednesday, 8 September 2021 at 12—2pm on the square in front of Publicum and Educarium. The purpose of the Opening Carnival is to welcome students to begin the new academic year and to welcome new students to the University of Turku. The Opening Ceremony starts at 2.15pm and will be organised as a virtual event this year.
The programme of the Carnival includes e.g. a welcome speech from the Rector, awarding the teacher and course of the year together with the representatives of the Student Union of the University of Turku, and a musical performance. After these, the Student Union has programme on the stage.
The Opening Carnival is an event organised together by the University of Turku and the Student Union of the University of Turku. In addition to following the stage programme, the participants can explore the different stands of the over 50 subject-specific and hobby organisations of the Student Union and the services of the University of Turku. In the event organised outdoors, the participants are requested to wear face masks and maintain safe distances to others.
The event will be organised if the weather permits. If it happens to rain, the event cannot be moved indoors due to health and safety reasons, but will be cancelled. The University community will be informed about this on the intranet pages and Facebook and Twitter accounts of the University of Turku at latest on the morning of the event day.

Rector Kola Gives a Speech in the Virtual Opening Ceremony
The official programme of the Opening Day will continue with the Opening Ceremony organised as a virtual event starting at 2.15pm. The Opening Ceremony can also be watched as a recording at a later point in time.
Rector Jukka Kola will give a speech at the Opening Ceremony. Chair of the Executive Board of the Student Union Aliisa Wahlsten and representative of the staff organisations, President of the Finnish Union of University Researchers and Teachers Maija S. Peltola will also present their greetings. Also, the commemorative medals of the University of Turku and the Turku Finnish University Society's awards for distinguished dissertations will be presented at the Ceremony. A cappella group Aura will perform at the Opening Ceremony.
The Opening Day service is held in the Turku Cathedral from 3.15pm onwards. The service can also be followed remotely as a virtual church service.

All the events on Opening Day are open to everyone without advance registration.
