The University of Turku was proud to host the Euro-Sino Symposium on Food, Health, and Sustainability, held from 3 to 4 October 2024 in Turku. The concluding event of the global pilot of Finland-China Food and Health Network (FCFH) gathered nearly 60 experts from leading European and Chinese universities and research institutions to discuss solutions to critical global challenges in food security, sustainable food systems, and public health.

The Coimbra Group Annual Conference and General Assembly, held in early June, brought together a large number of representatives from European universities in Turku. The theme of the event was: "Research and Education - Most Impactful Together" and focused on the synergies between research and education. 

A large number of European university representatives meet in Turku at the beginning of June for the Coimbra Group's Annual Conference and General Assembly. The event is hosted by the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University, both of which are long-standing members of the Group.

Professor of Evolutionary Biology Virpi Lummaa from the University of Turku in Finland has received a major funding from the European Research Council ERC. Lummaa received the funding for a research project that focuses on how major societal changes in the past 300 years have influenced human kinship networks and how they, in turn, have influenced the evolutionary fitness of people in the 18th to 20th century Finland. Lummaa also investigates the same questions in Asian elephants, which have suffered from declines in population size during the past 50 years due to human influence.

The two-day visit included meetings on topical issues, preparations for the Annual Conference which is organised in Turku in the summer of 2024, and participation in the Europe Forum.

The University of Oxford and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) announced a new global initiative during the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) in Montreal on 8 December 2022. The University of Turku is one of the founding universities of the Alliance. 

A seminar for free science and scholars was organised at the University of Turku in late November. The event was the first national Scholars at Risk Finland seminar, bringing together university representatives from Finland and other Nordic countries. The seminar also included speeches by representatives of the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters.

The Finland-China Network in Food and Health is a new multidisciplinary network which aims, on their part, to answer the global challenges related to food. The purpose of the network is to develop research and cooperation with impact, including innovations and business cooperation.

How can we support each other during and after the Covid-19 pandemic? This question was highlighted at the second EC2U Forum hosted online by the University of Turku in Finland. Co-operation and learning from others was seen as a clear way to survive and progress.

The Education Finland is a governmental cluster programme coordinated by the Finnish National Agency for Education. The programme promotes and supports Finnish education providers and matches their services with international customers.
