Institute of Dentistry Ranked 18th Best in the World

The Institute of Dentistry at the University of Turku has been ranked the 18th best in the world in the latest subject-specific Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). Only three other European universities made the top 20 in Dentistry & Oral Sciences, all the other places went to universities from the United States.

Rye and Barley Contain Beneficial Bioactive Compounds - Beer is a good source

Like many other cereal grain food products, beer contains several chemical compounds which can be considered as beneficial for our body. In his doctoral dissertation, MSc Juha-Matti Pihlava showed that the chemical diversity of hordatines in barley and barley malt beer is much larger than previously know. He also found that wheat and rye malt beers contain benzoxazinoids, which in other studies have been indicated to have anticarcinogenic properties.

Exposure to Cardiovascular Risk Factors Linked with Arterial Distensibility in Adolescence

The longitudinal study on children and adolescents conducted by the Research Centre of Applied and Preventive Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Turku is unique worldwide. The study shows that cardiovascular risk factors, such as overweight, high blood pressure, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and insulin resistance, are associated with arterial distensibility in adolescence.

 

Towards Sustainable Utilisation of Space

The research group of Professor Rami Vainio is developing novel particle instruments and innovative, radiation-tolerant solutions to nano-satellites such as Aalto-1. At the beginning of June, the research group of the University of Turku received an eight-year funding from the Academy of Finland as part of the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Research of Sustainable Space (FORESAIL) led by Professor Minna Palmroth (University of Helsinki).

University of Turku Received a Quality Label

The Finnish Education Evaluation Centre has conducted a re-audit of the University of Turku and has awarded the university a quality label that is valid for six years from 16 June 2017. The quality system of the University of Turku fulfils the national criteria and corresponds to the European quality assurance principles and recommendations for higher education institutions.

iCombine to Helsinki Challenge Final with Personalised Cancer Treatment

The seven finalists of the Helsinki Challenge competition have been selected. One of the finalists is a database called iCombine which enables personalised cancer treatment and involves researchers from the University of Turku.
