Studying at the Department of Chinese

Chinese Language studies at the University of Turku will prepare you in many ways for the diverse challenges presented by working life: the language skills necessary for expert positions, expertise in intercultural communication, understanding of the culture of the Chinese-speaking world, and a knowledge of digital communications. By making smart choices among the many minor subjects available, you create an interesting professional profile and open up a wide variety of career opportunities.

Chinese language studies focus on the language and communication skills required in the contemporary information society. In working life, communication is becoming increasingly multicultural, and good language skills, especially in Chinese – a language not widely spoken in Finland – will always provide you with a key advantage.

During the first three years of your Bachelor’s level studies, you will concentrate on developing your written and spoken skills in Chinese, gain theoretical knowledge about the language, and learn about the different Chinese-speaking societies. Your studies will consist of lectures, exercises, and independent work both in a classroom and in virtual learning environments. You can also include an internship in your studies.

In your fourth year, you can begin your Master’s level studies. At the Master’s level, you will continue your studies in the Language Specialist Degree Programme.

As a student of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Turku, you have excellent opportunities to go abroad during your studies. During your studies abroad, you will gain valuable knowledge and experience in the communities and societies where the Chinese language is used.
