The demarcation of study time is applied at the University of Turku for study rights beginning 1 August 2005 onwards (University Act 558/2009, 40§, 41§).

Demarcation of study time means that you have a certain number of years you can use for the completion of your degree.

  • This includes targeted completion times for degrees and some additional years. In addition, registration with the university may affect your study time.
  • You can check your study time in Peppi or contact the Student Centre Disco by email disco@utu.fi. Please remember to tell you study right number in your message to Disco.

If it seems that you will not be able to complete your degree on time you should apply for extension of your study time or additional time.

  • Applications for additional time are processed in Faculties. Please find application forms and more information at the bottom of this page.
  • Extension of study time can only be granted for specific legislative reasons. Please see more information below.

Deadlines

  • The application time is 1 - 31 March if your study time is ending on 31 July
  • The application time is 1 - 31 October if your study time is ending on 31 December.

If you apply by the due date, your application can be processed so that there will be no break to your study right.

Please notice that applying for additional time will be chargeable from 1 Jan 2025 onwards. This application processing fee will apply to all applications submitted on or after 1 January 2025. The charge is based on Government decree 199/2024, section 4. Because of the fee, please pay carefully attention to the duration of the additional time you are applying for, also taking into account what is advised about the personal study plan under the section 'important information for all students'.

How registration with the University affects your study time
  • If you have neglected registration altogether, your counter for study time will run as if you were registered as attending.
  • Registration status as non-attending is not counted anymore once there has been a decision for extension or additional time.
  • Until 1.1.2013 it was possible to have a temporary suspension of studies. This is considered equal to non-attendance as stated in 18c § of the Universities Act.
  • If the student's attendance status in the register changes during a semester, the status of the last day of the semester will be decisive.
It is possible to re-activate your study right
If the study right has been inactivated due to demarcation, it is possible to re-activate it.
  • It is possible to apply for additional time from the Faculty. Please read the specific instructions of applying for additional time below.

After the Faculty's decision of re-activation you can register with the University

Extension of Study Time Based on Legislative Reasons

Legislative reasons for extension of study time

The Universities Act states two reasons for non-attendance that entitle the student for an extension period: compulsory or voluntary military service and time off studies in regard to the child’s birth or adoption.

Apply for extension of study time on that semester as your study time is ending. Please check the deadlines above.

  • Extensions needs to be informed during your study time, not retrospectively after your study time has ended.
  • Reasons for extension will be taken into account also during additional time issued by the Faculty.
  • Extension for study time are processed in the Student Centre Disco.
  • Apply for the extension by using the electronic Study time application (or the pdf form), which along with instructions can be found at the bottom of this page.
  • For questions concerning the extension of study time, contact the Student Centre Disco by email (disco[at]utu.fi). Please remember to tell you student number or Finnish ID code in your message to Disco.
