My recent course topics and teaching interests include the international and transnational history of the Baltic Sea region, the politics of history and remembering during the 20th century, the history of youth activism, the interaction of politics and culture, the individual's role in history, and the methodology of historical research.
Research
My research focuses on international and transnational history of the Baltic Sea region, Finnish and European 20th century political history, the interaction between politics and culture, the role of the individual in history, the history youth activism, oral history, and the political uses of history. I have written about Soviet cultural diplomacy with the Nordic countries at the outbreak of the Second World War, the Comintern's undercover network in Scandinavia, and Finnish intellectuals and domestic politics in the interwar period. Beginning in 2020, I'm in charge of the project "Passion and Emotion in Finnish Secondary Schools, 1960-1975: The Breaking of the Emotional Regime in the Final Stages of the Secondary School System", funded by the Kone Foundation.
