Biography
Juha Ylisalo is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Political Science unit. His doctoral dissertation was examined in late 2017, and in early 2018, he obtained his doctoral degree (Doctor of Social Sciences).
Alongside his post-doctoral project funded by the Academy of Finland, he is the principal investigator in The Life Cycle of an Electoral Pledge in a Multiparty Democracy project funded by the Emil Aaltonen Foundation. He is also a member of the editorial team of Politiikka, an academic journal published by the Finnish Political Science Association, and takes part in the activities of the Finnish National Election Study (FNES) consortium.
Teaching
In recent years, Juha Ylisalo has taught research methods at the level of intermediate studies (A3.2 Quantitative Research Methods in Political Science, 2021), supervised bachelor’s theses (2020–2021) and taught special courses on political parties and their programmatic objectives (2020, 2021). In his current position as a Postdoctoral Researcher, his tasks centre on research. However, students who plan or already work on projects that address party politics or elections, for instance, are welcome to contact him.
Research
Juha Ylisalo’s current research addresses especially the programmatic aims that parties set in parliamentary elections: their backgrounds and policy consequences as well as the ways in which citizens evaluate parties’ goal attainment.
His other research interests include the time perspective of politics and the acceptability of coercive policy measures especially in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. In his doctoral thesis, he studied the effects of the partisan composition of governments on the public economy in the EU countries.
