Biography

I defended my doctoral dissertation in Comparative Literature entitled Understanding Abuse and Justice through Genres: Migration and Human Rights in Contemporary German Comics in November 2023.

My doctoral research was part of the “Comics and Migration. Belonging, Narration, Activism” project (2018–2020), which was funded by the Kone Foundation. Previously, I have also served as a co-coordinator of the Nordic-Baltic network ”Comics and Society: Research, Art, and Cultural Politics” (2019–2021).

I am currently employed in the project Diversity in Finnish Comics History: Minorities and Self-representation, affiliated with the Department of Finnish Literature.

Alongside my work as a scholar, I am a literary and comics critic.

Research

I am interested in societal, ethical, and political dimensions of comics.  I have specialized in German and Finnish comics.

In my dissertation, I studied the entanglements of migration, human rights, and genres in contemporary German comics. My dissertation showcases how comic art negotiates conceptions and practices in relation to migration, human rights, justice, and interpersonal responsibilities.

My current work in the Diversity in Finnish Comics History: Minorities and Self-representation project concerns the history and present-day developments of Finnish queer comics.
