University of Turku Attracts Fulbright Scholars
The University of Turku has received more applications for Fulbright scholarships than ever before. Three U.S. researchers and two academically talented students are visiting the University this semester on Fulbright grants.
In previous years, the University has received approximately one visitor per semester. Both University and Fulbright coordinators believe the increasing interest is due to scholars sharing their experiences at their home universities as well as the University units’ own activity in promoting research.
– I am happy to see that the University of Turku is such an alluring destination for researchers, says International Affairs Officer Kirsi Korpela.
One of the visiting scholars is Professor of Chemistry Floyd Beckford from the University of Virginia’s College at Wise. His research focuses on metal complexes that can potentially be used in targeting cancer medication. Both Beckford and his host at the Department of Chemistry, Docent Ari Lehtonen have found the co-operation rewarding and are confident in future collaboration.
– We hope to see the new research collaboration continuing and expanding sometime in the near future, perhaps with one of our doctoral candidates visiting the Fulbright scholar’s home university in exchange, says Lehtonen.
Beckford has enjoyed his teaching and research tasks at the University. After his autumn visit, he intends to continue the collaboration and hopefully visit Finland again in the future.
– The Fulbright Center’s relationship with Finnish universities is exceptional. Their mission is very important in the context of bilateral relations. I am extraordinarily grateful for the opportunity to be here, participating in a programme like this, says Beckford.
Beckford and other Fulbright scholars currently in Finland give presentations at the American Voices seminar at the University of Turku on 12–13 October. The seminar is organised by the University of Turku North American Studies Program and the Fulbright Finland Foundation, and it is supported by the U.S. Embassy in Helsinki.
