The Amazonian Biodiversity under Close Study
A Finnish-Brazilian collaboration that researches the variation of biodiversity in the Amazon has received the biggest funding, over 670 000 euro, from the Academy of Finland and the São Paulo Research Foundation.
The joint collaboration of Docent Hanna Tuomisto (UTU) and researcher Dilce de Fátima Rossettin (INPE) aims to find out the variation of biodiversity in the Amazon. The research will cover both the present variation of the biodiversity and the geological history that has shaped the current situation.
In order to reach the research goals, the collaboration utilises new remote sensing methods, exceptionally extensive and internally consistent land data, and understanding about the geological history of the Amazon as well as about the ecology of suitable indicator species.
The information provided by the collaboration is important because the protection of the biodiversity and the sustainable use of the forest’s resources require that the nature reserve network includes a comprehensive amount of different habitats and species.
The collaboration received over 670 000 euro funding for the period from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2017. The funding is the biggest grant that was awarded to Finnish-Brazilian research.
The Academy of Finland and the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) decided to fund five Finnish-Brazilian collaborations that research biological diversity and sustainable use of natural resources with nearly three million euro.
