NTU Ranking: University of Turku Is a Strong and Multidisciplinary Research University
The Taiwanese NTU Ranking has ranked the best 800 universities in the world. In the 2018 ranking, the University of Turku was placed 335th.
In the 2018 ranking, the University of Turku was placed 335th and was the second best Finnish university after the University of Helsinki.
The latest placement in the NTU ranking indicates that the University of Turku is a strong, multidisciplinary research university. In the subject-specific ranking, the University was among the best 300 universities in the following fields:
- Plant & animal science (196th)
- Agricultural sciences (253rd)
- Clinical medicine (261st)
- Life sciences (287th)
- Environment/ecology (293rd)
- Social Sciences (294th)
First place in the ranking went to Harvard University. All in all, eight Finnish universities are among the 800 ranked universities. Of the Nordic universities, Swedish and Danish institutions of higher education were most successful in the ranking. Three European universities are among the top 10, all from the UK (Oxford, University of London/University College London and Cambridge).
In the NTU ranking, the weight of research productivity is 25 percent, the weight of research excellence 40 percent, and the weight of research impact 35 percent. Due to these indicators, large universities can somewhat benefit from their size.
The ranking evaluates research universities' academic performance and achievements in six fields and 14 different subjects. Due to the publication databases used as the basis of the ranking, arts and humanities, for example, are missing from the ranking entirely.
NTU Ranking focuses on scientific publications, i.e. it compares universities on the basis of research productivity, quality and impact with the methods of bibliometric evaluation.
