Drafting this accessibility statement

This statement, which focuses on accessibility, was drafted on the 16th of September, 2019. Its foundation is built upon the original Drupal 8 content management framework, which was implemented when establishing the new University of Turku's public website.

This statement is based on an accessibility evaluation conducted for the utu.fi website in July 2019. This comprehensive analysis was carried out by Wunder Finland Ltd.

Over the course of the website's lifecycle, we have committed to continuous improvements, enhancing various elements via systematic updates and accessibility fixes.

The original evaluation involved a thorough comparison of content templates, elements, and functions. These were benchmarked against the AA level of the WCAG 2.1 standard and other general recommendations. To ensure a comprehensive review, the evaluation was predominantly conducted using three major web browsers: Safari, Chrome, and Firefox.

Furthermore, the testing took into account the needs of users with disabilities, testing our assistive technology support primarily with macOS's built-in VoiceOver screen reader.

The purpose of the accessibility evaluation was to assess the ease of use and, above all, the accessibility of both data and services from the following perspectives:

  • intelligibility of content
  • motoric limitations
  • cognitive limitations
  • sight and hearing defects
  • versatility of navigation
  • assistive technology support

Especially the following parts and content types of the website were reviewed in the accessibility evaluation:

  • Front page
  • Landing pages
  • Navigation
  • Website search
  • Education search
  • Basic page
  • News
  • Press release
  • Public defence of doctoral dissertation
  • Event

Inaccessible Content

Embedded Elements

Although the university aims to provide as accessible a website as possible, the website includes embedded elements, typically maintained by third parties. These elements may include, for example, videos, maps, or social media feeds.

As the web administration team does not directly review the accessibility of these embedded elements, we cannot guarantee their compliance with WCAG 2.1 recommendations.
