Multiobjective optimization increases safety and cost efficiency of the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel in Finland

In Finland, during the next decades, possibly even for a hundred years, the spent nuclear fuel of Olkiluoto and Loviisa nuclear power plants will be disposed of in canisters into the bedrock at Olkiluoto. The decisions in the final disposal process have a significant impact on safety and cost efficiency of the final disposal. Researchers of the University of Turku have developed a multiobjective scheduling model and a canister loading optimization algorithm to support this decision making.

The BioTIME database offers unprecedented insight into how biodiversity is changing through time across the globe, spanning nearly 150 years of ecological records from 1874–2023.

Fewer women choose natural and engineering sciences in more gender-equal countries

In more gender-equal countries, girls tend to avoid natural and engineering sciences more than girls in countries with lower levels of gender equality, according to a doctoral dissertation by M.A. Marco Balducci at the University of Turku. Balducci argues that in more gender-equal societies, individual preferences may have an even stronger influence on educational choices than in less equal societies.
